Bathroom Safety for the Elderly

Tuesday, April 23, 2013 11:41:18 AM America/New_York

As folks age their sense of balance can become compromised, which is why if you are caring for an elderly person, you need to make sure that the bathroom remains a safe place.

Taking a bath or a shower can be extremely dangerous and cause terrible injuries to a person if they slip and fall. Installing a shower or bath mat to make the surface slip-resistant is the first step, also having no-slip bath mats with suction cups on the bottom will help secure their footing when they step out of the bath or shower. Bath or shower grip bars will also help them hold on as they are entering or exiting the bath. They will be able to right themselves and to secure their place. A shower chair should also be considered if standing for too long places a strain on their body. Being able to sit down while cleaning makes for a worry free shower experience. Just make sure there are grab bars inside the shower for the person to grab hold of when standing up.

Being able to live an independent life should be the right of any person as they age. When a few simple precautions are taken for their health and safety in the bathroom, this will be a right they will enjoy for a long time.
