Nasal Cannulas and Oxygen Masks:
A nasal cannula is a small tube that oxygen patients use to inhale medical oxygen. A standard cannula has two “prongs” that will fit into a patients nose, most cannula have a seven foot hose that can attach to any barb on either an oxygen regulator or a concentrator. The use of a nasal cannula is beneficial for patients who use oxygen because it puts the oxygen right at their nostrils. A nasal cannula can be used 24 hours a day and patients who do not breathe through their noses while sleeping.
Nasal cannulaes can sometimes cause irritation to your nose or the inside of your nose. It’s important to understand that pure oxygen does react to petroleum based products like Vaseline. If you have any kind of irritation to the inside of your nose you should use a water based moisturizer. The combination is not flammable but oxygen plus fire makes everything flammable, oxygen molecules will adhere and saturate any petroleum based products and cause irritation.
Specialty Medical Supply offers several different kinds of nasal cannulas. A Baxter cannula has a small tab underneath your nose and can help keep the cannula in the right spot. A Salter cannula is very soft and comfortable. And micro cannulas are used for patients with very small noses.
The use of an oxygen mask is often considered a viable option, sometimes patients consider a oxygen mask less intrusive or irritating but the use of an oxygen mask needs to be understood. When using an oxygen mask you will inhale what you exhale, your lungs inhale air or pure oxygen but release carbon dioxide which is not completely expelled when you exhale. When using an oxygen mask your liter flow (whatever it is) will need to be doubled to help expel any carbon dioxide released during exhalation. Inhaling carbon dioxide can cause brain asphyxia and nitrogen levels to rise in your blood stream and can ultimately breakdown your body’s own natural ability to breathe.
The use of an oxygen mask especially a re-breather with a diaphragm is a great tool to help assure that the oxygen you are breathing in is benefitting you the most and maintaining the highest possible concentration of pure air and increasing your oxygen saturation.
