Oxygen Tank Regulators

Chad Therapeutics Oxygen Tank Regulator Mini Oxygen Tank Regulator (0-15LPM)

Oxygen regulators ensure that a patient is able to receive the precise air flow from their oxygen tank that has been prescribed by their doctor. An oxygen regulator keeps a patient’s blood oxygen level at a desirable percentage by allowing the flow to be increased or decreased accordingly. There are a few different types of regulators to suite a variety of needs though they all will attach to the dome shaped top of a medical grade oxygen tank.

Continuous flow regulators provide a constant steady release of oxygen. Excluding pediatric oxygen tank regulators, 0-8 LPM or 0-15LPM (liters per minute) regulators are appropriate for most patients and tanks. Always check with your doctor to ensure which regulator is suitable for your oxygen needs. The continuous flow rate regulator style will deplete the oxygen tank more quickly than a conserver regulator due to the inability to stop the unceasing flow rate when used. The main advantage of a continuous flow oxygen regular is the cost; they tend to be much cheaper than their conserving device regulator counter parts.

SmartDose Electronic Oxygen Tank Conserver

Oxygen Conserving regulators distribute oxygen only when the user inhales. This eliminates oxygen waste and can increase the longevity of an oxygen tank by as much as five times as compared to a continuous flow regulator. Pneumatic oxygen tank conservers are mechanically and rely on the setting and pressure of the compressed oxygen to deliver measured doses. An electric oxygen conserver measures doses electronically and sounds an alarm if the patient ceases normal breathing for too long a period of time. Both can be used as a continuous flow regulator if desired but the LPM is not that considerable, typically being 1-2 LPM max. As an emergency, such as batteries expiring or the conserver failing, all conserving regulators automatically switch to a continuous flow to ensure a patient gets the oxygen they need. These conserving regulator devices are not suitable for all oxygen users as some people do not have a strong enough breath to trigger the piston in order to receive oxygen or are severe mouth breathers and need to breathe through your nose to trigger the pulse dose regulator. Please consult with your physician to learn more about which regulator is good for you.

Another reputable conserving device is the EasyPulse 5 from Precision Medical. This compact, light weight oxygen regulator is the only pneumatic conserving regulator that uses a standard single lumen cannula and delivers a pulse comparable to an electronic conserver without the nuisance of alarms and batteries. With the Easy Pulse 5 Conserving Device if a patient's breathing accelerates, the minute volume is controlled to only release the prescribed level of oxygen. The Easy Pulse 5 tank regulator from precision medical is the leading pneumatic conserver on the market because of its reliability and its durability. Devilbiss PD1000 is one of the top models of oxygen conserving devices because it is both durable and affordable. The simple control knobs tighten easily, even for those who have limited hand dexterity and comes backed with a 3 year manufacturer’s warranty. The DeVilbiss PD1000 conserver regulator is user responsive meaning it delivers more oxygen when a patient’s breathing increases to eliminate the need to adjust the settings during exertion. A visual indicator light will flash red when the internal battery is low so you know when it is time to replace it.

Oxygen Regulators how they work and how to attach them to an oxygen tank.

A standard oxygen regulator will allow you to adjust your liter flow from 1-8 liters per minute. An oxygen regulator is just that; it regulates the flow of the oxygen from the tank in order to administer the correct dose of oxygen to the patient through an oxygen mask or oxygen tubing.

Portable oxygen tank sizes range from 10”-36” tall, any size aluminum oxygen tank that is portable (B, M6, C, D, & E) will use the same oxygen regulator. Oxygen regulators have different colors and sizes but attach the same way; all sizes of oxygen tanks have the same valve on the top which has a small tab or toggle at the top. All oxygen regulators have a small gauge that will read up to 3,000lbs. A tank that is completely full of oxygen and is considered safe will only read up to 2200lbs, so do not be alarmed if your tank gauge does not read the tank is full.

To attach an oxygen regulator to an oxygen cylinder:

  • Loosen the set screw all the way on the medical regulator
  • Line up the two pins inside the 02 regulator with the small holes on the valve at the top of the oxygen cylinder.
  • Let the oxygen regulator drop all the way down.
  • Slowly move the 02 regulator up until the pins fall into the two small holes on the valve.
  • Tighten the setscrew until it cannot move but be sure not to over tighten the setscrew (the 02 regulator has a small rubber gasket inside of it to secure the seal and prevent oxygen from leaking).
·         After you have established a good seal you should be able to open the valve on the top of the cylinder and set the flow on the oxygen regulator to your prescribed amount and attach a nasal cannula or oxygen mask to the barb on the 02 regulator.
