General
Wheelchair cushions were devised for individuals who spend the most of their day in a seated position. Wheelchair cushions are used to help hinder the development of sores, provide comfort, aid posture and absorb shock. The right cushion also helps to support your spine. We carry a large collection of wheelchair cushions to choose from and each type offers distinct advantages and disadvantages. There are four types of wheelchair seat cushions: gel, foam, air filled and contour/positioning. What type of cushion you select will rely on an array of factors, including how much time you spend in your chair, how much you re-position in your chair, and how stable your posture is.
No one cushion is best for everyone, so understanding benefits and drawbacks is essential in selecting the proper cushion for you.
Gel
Gel filled cushions are typically used for people who have developed sores or have the inclination to develop them. These cushions are intended to relive pressure by gently cradling your most tender points creating a firm yet comfortable surface. They shape to you without letting you sink in too deeply and provide excellent pressure distribution. Unfortunately, gel cushions tend to be much heavier than other types, which can cancel out some of the benefits of your lightweight wheelchair. The heat from your body dissipates into the gel instead of collecting; gel is not as effective at absorbing shock. Other cushion types are better able to absorb impact.
If you want to use a gel cushion on a daily basis, it is beneficial to have an alternate foam cushion since gel and air flotation cushions can leak.
Foam
Foam cushions are the most popular type of cushion and are used for people who aren't likely to develop sores. They are a good choice for individuals looking for a lightweight, inexpensive, and low upkeep seating surface. While some foam cushions are a single-density, others feature contoured infrastructure with several layers of foam, designed for enhance pressure management and positioning. Wheelchair cushions made of foam have a tendency to compress quickly. As a result, they become worn more frequently than other types of cushions and need to be replaced more often. If you choose a foam cushion, be sure to replace it when its time is up. Old foam that is compressed can allow pressure points to form that can lead to a sore. Different foams are often used in combination, layered for their various properties of softness, support, and density.
Air
Air cushions are designed to disperse pressure smoothly so that the skin’s pressure points attain comfortable relief. Air cushions are lightweight and waterproof but do require some maintenance in adjusting the air pressure. Most air cushions need to be routinely inflated in order to maintain pressure properly. Air cushions can be less suitable for those who shift about in their chair a lot, but new models offer options that diminish this dilemma. The balloons used in many air cushions can be pierced causing leaks to occur; patching them is easier than with the gel cushions. To find a leak, submerge the cushion in water and watch where the air bubbles emerge from. Patch accordingly.

Positioning Cushions
Positioning cushions are designed for people who have a particularly high contingency of skin breakdown, significant spinal curvatures or asymmetries in posture, who also seeks incomparable comfort and stability.
