Ambulatory Aids

Ambulatory Aids – Assisting with Mobility

One of the most difficult things about aging is the inability to get around on your own. The elderly quickly begin to miss their independence when they realize their joints and musculature no longer allow them to move independently. However, with the help of ambulatory aids, traversing from point A to point B is made much easier. This is also the case with people recovering from an injury, no matter their age. By equipping the elderly and injured with their own mobility aids, the people utilizing the aids as well as caring friends and family gain a satisfying peace of mind.

Ambulatory aids designed to assist the injured or elderly are important for daily independent movement. Standard and rolling walkers are ideal for the elderly or those individuals undergoing physical therapy recovery from an injury. A few models are available to fit the exact situation at hand. Crutches are also useful. Standard models along with their required accessories are available. These are specifically designed as mobility aids for injured outpatients. Forearm crutches can be for more permanent situations of elderly individuals who need additional help getting around. However, they can also be suitable for helping an injured person.

Canes are often preferred by elderly people who need ambulatory aids, but not to the extent of requiring forearm crutches. Standard walking canes come in several designs to suit the situation and preference of the elderly person. Some can be unfolded into portable seats and others are fully collapsible so they can be stored easily when not in use. There are also quad canes that serve as more stable mobility aids. Their bases are larger, featuring four prongs that allow pressure to be applied at various angles on the cane without shifting at all. Again, several models are available, but because of the more complicated base, these are not collapsible.

There is also an entire category of specialty walkers. These ambulatory aids have unique attachments for different purposes. The knee walkers provide mobility to people who have injured or otherwise cannot use a foot or ankle but still want to move independently. This comfortable alternative to crutches is typically preferred by patients, particularly if they have a permanent condition like an amputation or long-lasting condition like a broken bone. Many of these mobility aids come in adult and youth sizes to accommodate anyone who needs a personal support to get around to various destinations.
