Specialty Medical Supply :: Wheelchairs & AccessoriesHow to choose the right wheelchair for youSpecialty Medical Supply is committed to providing our customers the best quality and price for your wheelchair. We only offer wheelchairs from manufacturers that are reputable and stand behind their products in both quality and service. Our wheelchairs do not require assembly and all of them collapse for easy storage and transport There are five (5) different kinds of wheelchairs. Transport wheelchairs are the lightest and easiest to use. A transport wheelchair has four small wheels and is the lightest weight of all wheelchairs. Most transport wheelchairs weigh about nineteen to twenty five pounds (19-25lbs). Using a Transport wheelchair is practical for patients who cannot or do not need to propel themselves and for caregivers who cannot handle a lot of weight it is easy to carry and put away. Manual Wheelchairs are the most common and inexpensive wheelchairs, a standard manual wheelchair is about eighteen inches wide (seat width) and weighs roughly forty to fifty pounds (40-50lbs). A manual wheelchair is also very cost-effective and sturdy. If you have ever seen the wheelchairs used in the front lobby of a hospital or mall/store you know what a manual wheelchair is. Lightweight Wheelchairs are not any different structurally than a manual wheelchair with the exception that a lightweight wheelchair has been built with more aluminum in the frame to lighten it up. Lightweight wheelchairs commonly have nylon padded seats and lighter wheels, frame etc. Lightweight wheelchairs weigh at least ten pounds (10lbs.) less than a standard manual wheelchair, about thirty two to thirty seven pounds (32-37lbs.). Bariatric Wheelchairs are used for patients who are 300 to six hundred pounds (300-600lbs) bariatric wheelchairs are heavy duty and built to carry bariatric patients comfortably and safe. Bariatric wheelchairs are also known as extra wide wheelchairs or heavy duty wheelchairs since they are built with extra strong cross braces and have reinforced seating and higher strength wheels. Reclining Wheelchairs have a high back and are mostly used for geriatric patients that need more support for their backs and heads, reclining wheelchairs can also lay completely flat so a patient can sleep. Specialty Medical Supply’s reclining wheelchairs also have a ten inch (10”) extension that is removable. When choosing any kind of wheelchair it is important to take into consideration both your height and weight. A patient that is less than one hundred and fifty pounds (150lbs) might want to consider a sixteen inch (16”) seat width and patients weigh in excess of two hundred and eighty pounds (280lbs) should consider a wider seat width and select a heavy duty wheelchair.
