Gel mattresses are designed to prevent pressure sores in bedridden patients.  They work by dispersing weight and pressure over a larger surface area.  The mattresses are placed on top of the standard bed mattress and kept in place by four corner straps that wrap around the standard mattress.  The gel is aqueous in nature and very different than memory foam mattresses.
