How does a nebulizer work?

A nebulizer compressor is an air compressor. A seven foot hose attaches to the compressor and the bottom of nebulizer mouthpiece. The nebulizer mouthpiece is an agitator that has a disc or cone inside that pulsate rapidly from compressed air fed through the bottom of the nebulizer cup. The result of compressed air fed to the nebulizer cup causes the medication to become an “aerosol” and is intended to be inhaled. Nebulizer medication (Albuterol, Ipratropium, DuoNeb, Formoterol/Budesonide, Pulmicort) is considerably more effective than a rescue inhaler. Aerosol nebulizer medication goes deeper into the patient’s lungs and can reduce the amount of asthmatic occurrences and drastically improve lung function. Nebulizers use oxygen, compressed air or ultrasonic power to nebulize medical solutions into aerosol droplets that can be inhaled from a mouthpiece. The definition of an aerosol is a "mixture of gas and liquid particles," and the best example of an aerosol is mist, formed when small water particles are mixed with hot air are cooled and condense into a cloud of airborne water droplets.

How to use a nebulizer?

A nebulizer is the most common way to take respiratory medicines that don't require holding your breath, something a person with COPD would find hard to do. Learning to use a nebulizer is simple.  Make sure you know how to use your nebulizer before you use it to breathe in your medicine. Nebulizers administer medicine in the form of a liquid, the reason these pharmaceuticals are inhaled is to target the respiratory tract. The most commonly used are nebulizer compressors, which are also called "atomizers".Nebulizer compressors are connected by tubing to a compressor that causes compressed air to flow at a high rate through a liquid medicine to turn it into an aerosol, which is then inhaled by the patient. Currently there seems to be a tendency among physicians to prefer prescription of a pressurized Metered Dose Inhaler for their patients, instead of a Jet nebulizer that generates a lot more noise (often 60dB during use) and is less portable due to a heavier weight. However Jet nebulizers are commonly used for patients in hospitals who have difficulty using inhalers, such as in various cases of respiratory disease, or asthma attacks. The main advantage of nebulizer compressor is related to its low operational cost.

What are the top brands of nebulizers?

Devilbiss, Invacare, Pari, John Bunn, Medline & Drive are all manufacturers of nebulizer compressors. All of these brands and models include a nebulizer mouthpiece kit. Each brand has different types of mouthpieces but essentially do the same thing and all the nebulizers we sell come with a warranty.

Nebulizer Mouthpieces

A nebulizer mouthpiece whether it is disposable or reusable will need to be replaced; regular use (3-4 times a day) can eventually wear it out. A disposable nebulizer mouthpiece will need to be replaced after 4-6 weeks of regular use; a reusable nebulizer cup can last up to 6 months and is dishwasher safe.

How to clean nebulizers?

Nebulizer mouthpieces need to be cleaned after each use, rinsing the mouthpiece and taking it apart to eliminate any unused medication is an important step to insure the proper long term use of the mouthpiece. Understand; you do not want to inhale something that you exhaled four or eight hours earlier!

Nebulizer medication that is left to sit in the cup and dry can crystallize and flake; flakes that are small and hard to see can increase the amount of time taking a nebulizer treatment. You can clean a nebulizer mouthpiece by soaking for twenty minutes in one part white vinegar and two parts water once a week is considered acidic and will kill any bacteria in the cup.

Nebulizer filters?

Nebulizer filters that are dirty and left unchanged can damper the use of the compressor. When a nebulizer compressor filter needs to be changed it can turn yellow or may have a brown spot on the side, especially in a smoker’s home. Most filters need to be changed once every six months. Compressor filters can be purchased but most manufacturers include a pack of five extra filters with the equipment.

Asthma

Asthma is marked by the narrowing of airways. When this happens, it is difficult to breathe. Coughing and tightness in the chest, wheezing or shortness of breath are common symptoms of an attack. At least two of these symptoms tend to occur at the same time before an attack. Using a nebulizer during an attack can help eliminate sever asthmatic symptoms quickly. A nebulizer is a small machine that is powered by an air compressor. Though it is portable, it requires electric, tubing connects the compressor to a cup that holds the liquid medicine. Depending on the person's needs, a nebulizer can be used with either a mask or a mouthpiece. A mask is generally used with the elderly, babies and small children. Nebulizers are available online, and some insurance companies will cover all or part of the cost.

Function & Purpose

Nebulizers can deliver the albuterol medication from a liquid to a mist. It is a preferred choice in hospitals, because it is capable of holding large doses and more effective than a fast-acting inhaler in reducing asthma symptoms. Not everyone who has asthma uses a nebulizer. They are primarily for those who have trouble using an inhaler. Geriatric patients, young children and infants benefit the most from nebulizers; it is a better way to get the proper dose of Albuterol. Nebulizers are also used for asthma patients, when fast-acting inhalers are not effective. If you have been to the hospital for asthma, it is likely you will be sent home with a nebulizer.

Care

It is important to properly clean your nebulizer after each use. An unclean nebulizer not only just gets clogged but can carry the possibility of infection. Always wash the medicine cup in warm soapy water after each use and let it air dry. At the end of each day, be sure to wash the cup, mouthpiece or mask in the same way and let it air dry. At least once a week let the mouthpiece soak for 30 minutes in 1/2 cup of white vinegar mixed with 1 1/2 cups of water. This combination is acidic and will eliminate any bacteria then, then let it air dry.
